Why do traditional CDNs struggle with larger digital assets?

CDNs are network based technologies that sit alongside the Internet, and provide delivery assistance for certain forms of web traffic, to reduce latency or improve quality of service. Most often organizations looking to improve their website performance would use a CDN to speed things along for their global customers. CDNs provide a global caching network that provide faster rendering to the consumer of each page they browse, by serving it from a closer location (cache) rather than the original website server that may be thousands of miles away. These micro-sized web page files are relatively easy to accelerate using this approach.

Traditional CDNs attempt to use this same approach to deliver larger digital files, or assets. Multi-Source Delivery: Velocix offers ground breaking Multi-Source delivery options that take large digital asset delivery to a new level, providing increased resilience and redundancy for download and progressive download (for video). With Multi-Source delivery, the file or asset is delivered from multiple cache locations in parallel rather than just from a single source. This eliminates a single point of failure, whilst also guaranteeing the delivery bitrate and quality of service. Our Multi-Source delivery option also supports pause and resume features with intelligent delivery that means that we guarantee file delivery and only charge for completions.

Streaming: Specifically for video delivery, the Velocix Network provides the ability to stream using both Adobe Flash and Windows Media formats. We have globally deployed Flash Media Servers and Windows Media Servers throughout our network, to provide a complete family of delivery services for streaming from anywhere around the globe, for both on-demand and live events. As well as true streaming solutions Velocix also provides Progressive Download for video. Progressive download provides a streaming like experience, at lower costs and can exploit the incremental benefits of our Multi-Source delivery capability.
